Main Task: Unmanipulated Photo's

1) Front Cover: This was my first orginal image that i was going to use for my front cover page, although it's a good image, the reason why i did not use this image as the main one is because the background ( windows) would have been too hard to work on to make my text stand out -also this wouldn't have been an ver effective image to use as the front page as you can't see the persons whole face. I then decided to use this image as a contents page image and I think i used it effectivly.

2) Front Cover: I also wanted to use this image as my front cover - but this had the same background problem as my first one - I also didn't chose this image because my model had her phone in her hand and is also not looking at the camera, this could have distracted my audience from the main focus of the page.

3) Front Cover: This is the image i chose to go with for my final product, i chose this image above the rest because firstly, it has a plain background which will enable the coverlines and the picture it's self to stand out - also in this picture you can see the whole of the models face allowing the target audience to engage more with the target audience. I also like the hand gesture my model is doing.

1) Contents page: This was the image i initially wanted to use as my main image on my contents page, but the reason why i chose to pick '1)Front cover' over this image is because i felt that the lighting is better in the one i chose and also this image is slightly out of focus.

2) Contents page: At first i didn't want to use this image as it was taken in my friends living room, but I then chose this image to use on my contents because it fits in perfectly with my 'Fashion' Catgorie.

  • There were also two other images i used on my contents page.

1)DPS: This was the image if fistly decided to use for my double page spread, but i changed my decisions because the image is slightly out of focus.

2)DPS: This is the image I've used for my double page spread, i used it because I liked the way it looked when i placed writing beside it because it looks as if my model is looking at the things she said in the interview.

3)DPS: This image is not used as the main image but I decided to use it because the main image I've used doesn't show my models face and also there was extra space on the page so this was a perfect image to fill the space because the background of the image is plain.

Main Task: Mood board

All these images represent the type of magazine I would like to make and some of the artists above will be featured in my magazine.

Main Task: Profiling Your Audience

1)
My demographic profile on ‘SPLASH’
The ‘SPLASH’ reader:  Toni-anne is 19 years old, she’s very passionate when it comes to the music industry, and she sings, dances and can even act.  On weekends Toni-anne spends her time at dance class’ and when at home she listens to artist such as; Nicki Manaj, Rihanna, Christ brown, drake and many others, She owns over 15 albums and listens to them whenever possible – she also says she cannot go a day without listening to music. In University she’s currently studying performing arts, drama and music technology – she says when she leaves uni she either wants to become a famous dancer or do music and producing. She’s currently working in a small CD shop in Oxford Street and is enjoying it.

2)
‘SPLASH’ magazine intends to develop their product to appeal to Toni-anne by featuring the artist she enjoys listening to; also we could have special articles on some of them, allowing her to get better information on the people she admires. I would talk more about the origins of dance (hip-hop). Also I would talk about famous/well-known music producers or famous dancers and help Toni-anne have a better insight into how she can fulfil her dreams and follow in one of their footsteps.  ‘SPLASH’ magazine will also give Toni-anne a chance to win concert tickets to either ‘Chris brown, Nicki Manaj or Rihanna’ by playing music based quizzes.

How many magazines do you read/buy?
Although i never asked many people this question, it's clear to say that my targeted audience find it easier and cheaper to find information through technology.

What would attract you to by a magazine?

.From this research it's clear that new "gossip" is essential when wanting to buy a magazine, it's also important for the cover to "look appealing" - these thing would attract my targeted audience to buy my magazine.

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis 4

Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a coloured photograph of a man looking directly into the camera. It is a close up shot showing the males head and shoulders. The photographed man’s name is next to his forehead on the left hand side. It’s not clear whether the man is sitting down or standing up. The background of the photograph is grey and the photograph covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the man is the ‘vibe’ masthead, and in front of him are the 6 cover-lines in blue, black and pink, with the different cover-lines separating each topic. There’s a web link on the bottom left hand corner of the magazine.
Masthead:
The ‘vibe’ masthead is very distinctive as it’s is block letters. With the background being grey and on contrast the bold blue writing makes the masthead stand out to the readers. The font that’s used for the vibe masthead is called ‘Typohile’ the masthead uses a contrast of capital letters and lowercase letters. The word ‘vibe’ is a noun which is also slang which can describe how one may feel about each other “example: you have a good vibe”. The magazine ‘vibe’ covers the hip hop/urban culture with a strong focus on music, articles, interviews and information.
Character:
The photographed male is of the very famous American rapper/singer Kanye West.
Composition:
He is posed in a very natural/ comfortable way, he doesn’t smile or doing anything different with his face. Example: pose. His clothing is very low-key suggesting that he’s a very normal, down to earth person
Costume:
You can’t see any of his clothing except for the collar of his jumper/cardigan which suggests him being down to earth and simple because that’s what most other people wear.
NVC:
His non verbal communication could come across as if he wasn’t bothered when this photograph was taken; he looks UN interested and almost a bit angry and plain or could also portray confidence and/ or cockiness.
Lighting:
There looks like there is a lack of lighting because the picture looks quite dim
Setting:
He’s not in a setting; he he’s got a grey backdrop behind him.
Cover-lines:
The main cover-line that relates to the photograph says “the truth hurts Kanye west ‘I am rap’ this is making a reference to the type of music he does and also it backs up the photograph, because the statement that he made was quite cocky and confident and that’s how he looks in the cover photograph. The other different cover-lines tell the reader that this magazine doesn’t focus just on Kanye West, or just one genre of music – the diversity in the genre of music gives the readers a variety to read about.  The other artists mentioned in the other cover lines were; J dilla, the dream, Britney spears, jay rock, Smokey Robinson and many more. Also the ways the cover lines have been written suggest gossip, “Battle for J dilla’s legacy”.  All the cover-lines are written in the same for ‘Son Serif’
Target audience:
Considering the points that I’ve made the target audience would be to the younger generation 23+ and aimed to both males and females. They would be interested about music especially r&b and urban types of music

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis 3

Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of many different, pastel colours and a photographed women looking directly down at the camera. The photographed woman’s name is next to her in large font. It is a long shot showing her from head 2 toes. She is standing up with her legs slightly open; her shoes are visible in this shot. The background of the photograph is white and navy blue with flowers and an animal (possibly a frog) in between the top half of her legs, the photograph covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the woman is the ‘vibe’ masthead and in front of her are 5 separate cover lines in white, purple and black. There’s a barcode at the bottom left hand corner and on top of the masthead is other artist that are also featured in the magazine alongside this woman.
Masthead:
The ‘vibe’ masthead is very distinctive as it’s is block letters. With the background being navy blue and on contrast the bold white writing makes the masthead stand out to the readers.
Character:
The cover of the magazine is of the successful American singers/rappers Nicki Manaj
Composition:
She is posed in a very dominate way, with her arms placed on her hips and the fact that she is looking down at the camera also suggest her being dominate. Her body language, pose and costume are both very sexual and suggests she superior
Costume:
Her clothing is very extravagant and different, bold and bright colours such as pink, long, leather boots that go above her knees. She’s also wearing a short white dress with pink on both sides and a blue belt.
NVC:
Her non verbal communication is seductive, and powerful. Her mouth is open displaying a light shade of pink lipstick.
Lighting:
The lighting is high key, as the photograph is displaying daytime.
Setting:
There is really no clear setting, but in my opinion she could be in a dream world/type environment as the white aspects on the page could represent clouds and the blue represents the clouds, also the fact that the flowers, the blue grass and animal looks animated also suggests that she could be set in a dream world.
Cover-lines:
None of the cover lines directly relate to the photographed woman, or directly refer to music “ world cup mania” this is making a reference that this magazine does not just subject on one particular thing (music industry) it has a wide range of things to talk/ write about – this also increase their target audience population. – “ the last song of Michael Jackson” this shows that this magazine may mostly focus on urban/ r&b but can also focus on different type of music and the latest drama or news (Michael Jacksons death). Many of the other cover-lines suggest that this magazine doesn’t just focus on the music part. Above the masthead there are names or singers/actors and comedians that may are also featured in the magazine, although
Nicki Manaj may be the focus on the magazine they also talk about other musicians and artists.  It suggests that in the ‘vibe’ magazine you’ll be receiving a lot more information than just music.  All the cover-lines use a ‘son serif’ font.
Target audience:
Considering the points that I’ve made the target audience would be to the younger generation 23+ and aimed to both males and females. They would be interested about music especially r&b and urban types of music, but can be interested in other thing such as football.

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis 2

Denotation:
The magazine consists of a white background photograph with a man looking directly at the camera. It’s a medium close up showing his head and just underneath his shoulders. He could be either sitting down or standing up (not visible).  The photograph covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the man is a Rolling stone masthead, and in front of him are 4 separate cover lines in white, red and black. The photographed man’s name is at the bottom right hand corner in a larger font in white. There is no barcode or web link visible.
Masthead:
The rolling stones masthead is a very unique but very distinctive logo: Red with white outline and a black drop shadow. The font which is used is a ‘Serif font’ – after each first letter of each word, the lower case letters join up to each other. This font is also famously used for the ‘coca cola’ writing and connotes American culture.  The actual words ‘rolling stone’ comes from the proverb ‘the rolling stone gathers no moss’ , giving a suggestion of anti –establishment and non-conformity. Also ‘the rolling stones’ is a well known band, suggesting that the magazine has all about that band and what there about. All the musicians that have used this phrase are associated with the rock and roll lifestyles, making the magazine feel dangerous and risqué. Overall the ‘Rolling stones’ tells the audience that this magazine is based on music.
Character:
The person photographed is of the successful American rapper ‘Wiz khalifa’
Composition:
He is posed in a very cool fashion; he’s staring straight at the camera in a winking pose/position and his mouth open. His pose and clothing (of what we can see) are very cool and down to earth.
Costume:
Of what we can see he is wearing a brown leather jacket with a white shirt that’s open showing a lot of his tattoos. He’s dyed one small section of his hair blonde showing his new image.
NVC:
His non-verbal communication could come across quite sexual to women as he is winking and his mouth is open displaying his white teeth, he’s also looking directly at the camera.
Lighting:
In my opinion the photograph is not supposed to display either day time or night time but there is a lot of light used which could suggest its meant to display day time.
Setting:
There is no setting; it seems he’s in front of a white backdrop.
Cover-lines:
The cover-line “new faces 2011” relates to the photograph of wiz khalifa, as he is (at this time) new to the music industry and the rolling stones magazine is promoting him.  Wiz khalifa was known before 2011 but only truly became famous for his work at the end of 2010. The “Hip hop rookie of the year” the term ‘rookie’ means a person who is in his or hers first year of doing something or has little or no professional experience in that field. The headline then goes on to say the man’s name ‘wiz khalifa’ this suggests that even though this man had no professional experience in the music industry he can still be very successful. The different cover-lines tell us that this magazine doesn’t focus only on the ‘new’ artist wiz khalifa; they also focus on other things such as; teen dreams, scarlet’s and many others. All the cover lines use serif font, connoting tradition. It suggests that the rolling stones magazine has existed for a long period of time, and has almost become an American institution.
Target audience:
Considering all the above points made, it’s likely the target audience would be people aged from 30-55 for both male and women. They’d have good knowledge of the popular culture and definite interest in a wide range of musical styles a d the music industry in general. They’d also be well read and have a interest in the American culture.

Main Task: Font Cover Textual Analysis 1

Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a coloured photograph of a young women looking directly towards the camera. It’s a medium –long shot showing her face, shoulders arms and thighs. She is standing near/ in front of a balcony with her body facing away from the camera. The background of the photograph is green, which looks a plants, so she could be outside, the photograph covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the woman is a ‘Rolling stone’ masthead and in front of her are 5 separate cover lines in black, red and white. The photographed woman’s name is next to her head in bold black writing and is bigger than the rest of the font on the page and this style of writing is on the page for every heading but in a smaller font. Also there is a barcode visible in the bottom left hand corner.

Character:
The cover photograph is of one of the most successful American singer/song writer ‘Rihanna’
Composition:
She is posed side – ways towards the camera with her face directly faced at the camera.  Her pose, body language and clothing are very sexually suggestive and provocative.
Costume:
She’s wearing a cream belly top, with shorts in a jeans material – the jeans are torn in several places, and showing lots of the thigh area. The target audience of this magazine is likely to be male, so the clothing worn was carefully chosen to appeal to that specific target audience.
NVC:
Her non-verbal communication is also very seductive, her mouth is slightly open displaying her teeth and lipstick and she’s also looking directly into the camera.
Lighting:
There’s a lot of light in this photograph as it’s supposed to display morning/afternoon time.
Setting:
The setting is not very clear, but the woman seems to be on a balcony near a park or somewhere with loads of flowers.

Cover-lines:
One of the main cover lines that relates to the photograph says: “Rihanna strikes back” – This could relate to when she got ’beaten up’ by her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown in February 2009; this headline could refer to the fact that Rihanna has reformed herself from that incident and is ready to ‘strike back’ the headline then goes on to say “bad boys and her attraction to the dark side” – this, also is a big reference to what happened in 2009. Artist mentioned on the cover-lines include; Rihanna, Britney Spears, Ricky Gervais, Elizabeth Taylor and Robbie Robertson.  The artist’s mentioned are not all singers/musicians. All the cover lines use serif font, connoting tradition. It suggests that the rolling stones magazine has existed for a long period of time, and has almost become an American institution.
Target audience:
Considering all the above points made on costume and nvc, it’s likely the target audience would be people aged from 30-55 for both male and women (but mostly men) They’d have good knowledge of the popular culture and definite interest in a wide range of musical styles a d the music industry in general. They’d also be well read and have an interest in the American culture.

Premilary Task: Front cover Textual Analysis

Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a coloured image of a young male looking directly towards the camera. In a medium close up image we see his head, arms and waist. He is standing in front of a plain black background which takes up the whole of the magazine cover. Behind him is a ‘College’ masthead in yellow writing and in front of him are separate cover lines in white and yellow writing.
Masthead
The masthead is a lime colour – this gives of quite a natural feel to the magazine – the text used is easily understood due to the bright colour and boldness of it – this allows the magazine to stand out. The Masthead is very large and fills out the page vertically

Character
The cover photograph of the magazine is a young boy and is supposed to represent a typical British college student. The image is clear and big – this allows the image to stand out and become the main focus

Composition
He is standing and smiling towards the camera and is also holding several books, the young boy looks very happy (nvc)

Costume
The young boy’s chosen outfit is very casual but appropriate for college, is clothes blend in with the background and also the overall colour scheme of the magazine (black and white) The boy is wearing a very distinctive cross around his neck – suggesting he’s very religious and this creates a very positive attitude towards college life.

Nvc (non-verbal communication)
The boy is smiling which indicates he’s either enjoying college life, enjoying the subjects he’s picked in college or even both .

Setting
There is no obvious setting in this picture, but it’s likely the boy is in college or has just come out of college due to the holding of the books; however the black background makes the image look more professional and allows the text and other information within the page to be noticed.

Lighting
From the actual image you can tell the lighting is high as you can see the brightness in the face of the boy, however the lighting does look artificial the back ground is a very low key light.

Cover-Lines
The cover lines are used to fill in the blank spaces were the image couldn’t take up – the overall colour scheme of the cover lines is black and yellow on contrast to a black canvas – this allows the text to easily stand out – the cover lines convey the main points within the magazine which attracts their readers to want their magazine. The main cover line is the largest as it is just a feature of the magazine but it is smaller than the heading. The main cover line does consist of the same colours as the over cover lines but it is more bold which grabs more attention, also the larger size suggests that it’s the most important topic and most interesting topic too.

Target audience
Considering all of the points above and the masthead, it’s likely that the targeted audience would be for college student or anyone whose going back to college or about to apply for the college, they would probably be of both genders (male and female)

Introduction.

Hi, my names Dejan Henry, i'm 16 years old and currently studying 4 A levels at Christ The King sixth form in Lewisham. The main reason why i chose to pick AS media studies is because I enjoyed studying it for 2 years when i completed my Diploma in creative and media.
Throughout this year our tasks are to create 2 magazines, one being a college magazine and another being a music magazine - this will be something i'll enjoy because it enables me to work on new equipment such as photo shop and this will allow me to develop new skills for the future.
