Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a coloured image of a young male looking directly towards the camera. In a medium close up image we see his head, arms and waist. He is standing in front of a plain black background which takes up the whole of the magazine cover. Behind him is a ‘College’ masthead in yellow writing and in front of him are separate cover lines in white and yellow writing.
Masthead
The masthead is a lime colour – this gives of quite a natural feel to the magazine – the text used is easily understood due to the bright colour and boldness of it – this allows the magazine to stand out. The Masthead is very large and fills out the page vertically
Character
The cover photograph of the magazine is a young boy and is supposed to represent a typical British college student. The image is clear and big – this allows the image to stand out and become the main focus
Composition
He is standing and smiling towards the camera and is also holding several books, the young boy looks very happy (nvc)
Costume
The young boy’s chosen outfit is very casual but appropriate for college, is clothes blend in with the background and also the overall colour scheme of the magazine (black and white) The boy is wearing a very distinctive cross around his neck – suggesting he’s very religious and this creates a very positive attitude towards college life.
Nvc (non-verbal communication)
The boy is smiling which indicates he’s either enjoying college life, enjoying the subjects he’s picked in college or even both .
Setting
There is no obvious setting in this picture, but it’s likely the boy is in college or has just come out of college due to the holding of the books; however the black background makes the image look more professional and allows the text and other information within the page to be noticed.
Lighting
From the actual image you can tell the lighting is high as you can see the brightness in the face of the boy, however the lighting does look artificial the back ground is a very low key light.
Cover-Lines
The cover lines are used to fill in the blank spaces were the image couldn’t take up – the overall colour scheme of the cover lines is black and yellow on contrast to a black canvas – this allows the text to easily stand out – the cover lines convey the main points within the magazine which attracts their readers to want their magazine. The main cover line is the largest as it is just a feature of the magazine but it is smaller than the heading. The main cover line does consist of the same colours as the over cover lines but it is more bold which grabs more attention, also the larger size suggests that it’s the most important topic and most interesting topic too.
Target audience
Considering all of the points above and the masthead, it’s likely that the targeted audience would be for college student or anyone whose going back to college or about to apply for the college, they would probably be of both genders (male and female)
