Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a coloured photograph of a young women looking directly towards the camera. It’s a medium –long shot showing her face, shoulders arms and thighs. She is standing near/ in front of a balcony with her body facing away from the camera. The background of the photograph is green, which looks a plants, so she could be outside, the photograph covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the woman is a ‘Rolling stone’ masthead and in front of her are 5 separate cover lines in black, red and white. The photographed woman’s name is next to her head in bold black writing and is bigger than the rest of the font on the page and this style of writing is on the page for every heading but in a smaller font. Also there is a barcode visible in the bottom left hand corner.
Masthead:
The rolling stones masthead is a very unique but very distinctive logo: Red with white outline and a black drop shadow. The font which is used is a ‘Serif font’ – after each first letter of each word, the lower case letters join up to each other. This font is also famously used for the ‘coca cola’ writing and connotes American culture. The actual words ‘rolling stone’ comes from the proverb ‘the rolling stone gathers no moss’ , giving a suggestion of anti –establishment and non-conformity. Also ‘the rolling stones’ is a well known band, suggesting that the magazine has all about that band and what there about. All the musicians that have used this phrase are associated with the rock and roll lifestyles, making the magazine feel dangerous and risqué. Overall the ‘Rolling stones’ tells the audience that this magazine is based on music.
Character:
The cover photograph is of one of the most successful American singer/song writer ‘Rihanna’
Composition:
She is posed side – ways towards the camera with her face directly faced at the camera. Her pose, body language and clothing are very sexually suggestive and provocative.
Costume:
She’s wearing a cream belly top, with shorts in a jeans material – the jeans are torn in several places, and showing lots of the thigh area. The target audience of this magazine is likely to be male, so the clothing worn was carefully chosen to appeal to that specific target audience.
NVC:
Her non-verbal communication is also very seductive, her mouth is slightly open displaying her teeth and lipstick and she’s also looking directly into the camera.
Lighting:
There’s a lot of light in this photograph as it’s supposed to display morning/afternoon time.
Setting:
The setting is not very clear, but the woman seems to be on a balcony near a park or somewhere with loads of flowers.
Cover-lines:
One of the main cover lines that relates to the photograph says: “Rihanna strikes back” – This could relate to when she got ’beaten up’ by her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown in February 2009; this headline could refer to the fact that Rihanna has reformed herself from that incident and is ready to ‘strike back’ the headline then goes on to say “bad boys and her attraction to the dark side” – this, also is a big reference to what happened in 2009. Artist mentioned on the cover-lines include; Rihanna, Britney Spears, Ricky Gervais, Elizabeth Taylor and Robbie Robertson. The artist’s mentioned are not all singers/musicians. All the cover lines use serif font, connoting tradition. It suggests that the rolling stones magazine has existed for a long period of time, and has almost become an American institution.
Target audience:
Considering all the above points made on costume and nvc, it’s likely the target audience would be people aged from 30-55 for both male and women (but mostly men) They’d have good knowledge of the popular culture and definite interest in a wide range of musical styles a d the music industry in general. They’d also be well read and have an interest in the American culture.
