Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis 2

Denotation:
The magazine consists of a white background photograph with a man looking directly at the camera. It’s a medium close up showing his head and just underneath his shoulders. He could be either sitting down or standing up (not visible).  The photograph covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the man is a Rolling stone masthead, and in front of him are 4 separate cover lines in white, red and black. The photographed man’s name is at the bottom right hand corner in a larger font in white. There is no barcode or web link visible.
Masthead:
The rolling stones masthead is a very unique but very distinctive logo: Red with white outline and a black drop shadow. The font which is used is a ‘Serif font’ – after each first letter of each word, the lower case letters join up to each other. This font is also famously used for the ‘coca cola’ writing and connotes American culture.  The actual words ‘rolling stone’ comes from the proverb ‘the rolling stone gathers no moss’ , giving a suggestion of anti –establishment and non-conformity. Also ‘the rolling stones’ is a well known band, suggesting that the magazine has all about that band and what there about. All the musicians that have used this phrase are associated with the rock and roll lifestyles, making the magazine feel dangerous and risqué. Overall the ‘Rolling stones’ tells the audience that this magazine is based on music.
Character:
The person photographed is of the successful American rapper ‘Wiz khalifa’
Composition:
He is posed in a very cool fashion; he’s staring straight at the camera in a winking pose/position and his mouth open. His pose and clothing (of what we can see) are very cool and down to earth.
Costume:
Of what we can see he is wearing a brown leather jacket with a white shirt that’s open showing a lot of his tattoos. He’s dyed one small section of his hair blonde showing his new image.
NVC:
His non-verbal communication could come across quite sexual to women as he is winking and his mouth is open displaying his white teeth, he’s also looking directly at the camera.
Lighting:
In my opinion the photograph is not supposed to display either day time or night time but there is a lot of light used which could suggest its meant to display day time.
Setting:
There is no setting; it seems he’s in front of a white backdrop.
Cover-lines:
The cover-line “new faces 2011” relates to the photograph of wiz khalifa, as he is (at this time) new to the music industry and the rolling stones magazine is promoting him.  Wiz khalifa was known before 2011 but only truly became famous for his work at the end of 2010. The “Hip hop rookie of the year” the term ‘rookie’ means a person who is in his or hers first year of doing something or has little or no professional experience in that field. The headline then goes on to say the man’s name ‘wiz khalifa’ this suggests that even though this man had no professional experience in the music industry he can still be very successful. The different cover-lines tell us that this magazine doesn’t focus only on the ‘new’ artist wiz khalifa; they also focus on other things such as; teen dreams, scarlet’s and many others. All the cover lines use serif font, connoting tradition. It suggests that the rolling stones magazine has existed for a long period of time, and has almost become an American institution.
Target audience:
Considering all the above points made, it’s likely the target audience would be people aged from 30-55 for both male and women. They’d have good knowledge of the popular culture and definite interest in a wide range of musical styles a d the music industry in general. They’d also be well read and have a interest in the American culture.
